Postmodernism: Challenging the Norms of Artistic Expression:

The intricate dance of art and culture often presents itself in waves of movements that, in succession, define, break, and redefine societal perceptions. Among the most transformative of these waves was the emergence of postmodernism, an art style that courageously confronted the established norms, asking audiences to question everything they knew.

1. The Rise of Postmodernism

In the mid-20th century, a wave of skepticism towards modernist ideals, characterized by a faith in objective truth and technological progress, began to surge. This led to the birth of postmodernism. Beyond art, it pervaded literature, architecture, and critical theory, reacting against the perceived elitism and absolutism of modernism.

2. Defining Characteristics

Postmodern art is inherently hard to define, and that's part of its essence. However, common traits include:

- Intertextuality: Drawing from various sources, blending high and low culture.

- Pastiche: A playful combination or imitation of different styles, often without a satirical intent.

- Meta-narratives: Rejecting the big universal stories and theories of modernism, embracing instead small, local narratives.

3. Techniques and Presentation

Postmodern artists employed a plethora of mediums and techniques, from paintings to installations. The boundary between art and the observer blurred, with many pieces inviting audience interaction. Artists like Cindy Sherman, with her photography that critiqued stereotypes, and Jeff Koons, who merged commercial and fine art, are emblematic figures.

4. Controversies and Criticisms

Postmodernism, with its tendency to deconstruct established norms, has faced its fair share of critiques. Some view it as overly cynical, lacking depth or originality. Others, however, praise it for democratizing art and making it more accessible and reflective of societal complexities.

5. The Lasting Impact

The echoes of postmodernism continue to shape the 21st century. While we've arguably moved into a post-postmodern era, the movement's ethos โ€” of questioning, challenging, and democratizing โ€” remains deeply influential. Contemporary artists still deconstruct traditional norms, suggesting that the essence of postmodernism is very much alive.

Conclusion

Postmodernism, in its quest to challenge and break free from established artistic conventions, has left an indelible mark on the canvas of art history. Its legacy serves as a reminder of the power of art to question, to challenge, and to redefine our understanding of the world around us. In a rapidly changing global landscape, the lessons of postmodernism are more relevant than ever, encouraging us to continually question and redefine our perspectives.

Artist Spotlight:

Featuring @MasterC0rnille

Entrepreneur in real life in the travel industry Master C has always dedicated his free time to art in various mediums. Not many people know it but he first wrote sci-fi books and even published one back in 2009. It's not until 2015 that he would concretely start visual art with oil painting while recovering from a medical procedure. He improved his style years after years until eventually discovering the NFT space in 2022. This date marks an important turn in his artistic journey as he would evolve to create exclusively digitally since then.

His current art speaks about the human condition and our emotions in societies. His style could be qualified of impulsive abstract expressionism interesting point about his creations is that he never uses layers or any other assistant tools or automated retouch. Every piece is hand-drawn and most of the time in one single stroke. Probably the inheritance of his oil painting years. He is very excited about the future of the NFT community in which he forged many friendships and host a successful Space called NFT Making-Art Talk. His main goal is to build close relationships with his Collectors for whom he curates and mint only a strict selection of artworks.
